Personality, cultural, and work style differences can affect many aspects of actual performance, perceived performance, and comfort level in discussion about performances. This is becoming an increasing challenge for those in management and supervisory positions as companies are becoming increasingly globalized and diverse. Certain cultural or personality types may prefer understatement or indirection which may lead to supervisors with more extroverted backgrounds or personality types to underestimate their achievements. Moreover, frank and direct discussion of the type favored by extrovert Americans may appear rude or make uncomfortable people from cultures favoring indirection. Conversely, more direct extrovert personalities may not understand the significance of more politely or indirectly phrased suggestions from supervisors.
