Give two reasons why the majority of judges tend to be white and male.

One reason for this could be discrimination.  For a long time, non-whites had fewer educational opportunities than white people did.  This continued up through the days when many people who are now in their 50s and 60s (many judges are in this age range) were in school.  This narrows the field of potential non-white and/or female judges.

A second reason could be the “old boys’ network.”  Judges can come to be selected based on how well they are connected to those in power.  Non-whites and women have had fewer chances to become parts of these networks of acquaintances and therefore may be less likely to be selected for judgeships.
